New for Winter 14/15 Kronplatz – In the Italian Dolomites

Our Italian Product Manager tests the slopes in the new Inghams resort of Kronplatz in the stunning Italian Dolomites.

KRONPLATZ – is the official Ladino (a local Italian dialect) name of the Italian ski area of Plan des Corones in the region of the Italian South Tyrol just 1 1/2   South East of Innsbruck.

Next winter Inghams will feature the lovely Village of San Vigilio in the heart of the Kronplatz ski area which also connects  via a speedy bus to the vast Dolomite Superski and the Sella Ronda.

The plan is to ski as much of the Kronplatz area and test the link to the Corvara Alta Badia which is on the Sella Ronda.

From San Vigilio The MIARA  gondola  takes you in approx 10 minutes to the top of the San Vigilio ski area.  At the top of this lift you have a nice selection of blues and reds to get your legs back on the first day.

The top of the Miara Gondola

From here just one chair lift and another gondola will take you up to the top of the “Dome” of KRONPLATZ with 360 degree views of the unique dolomite mountains. Here you have a selection of ski runs starting at the top of the Dome.

You know when you have arrived as the famous landmark the  “Concordia Peace Bell” which chimes every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 12 o’clock, marks the spot and centre of this  magnificent mountain.

You have arrived – The peace bell takes pride of place

From here you have a huge selection of runs and slopes to chose from, you can go up and down all day and not ski the same piste twice.

After an hour or so exploring the numerous routes I make my way back to San Vigilio on the lovely RED 34 which joins to BLUE 36 back to base.

Is that a cat!????

Now let’s try the other side of the mountain and find my way to the Alta Badia and the Sella Ronda. A quick connection on the SKI TRANS BRONTA gondola to the PEDAGA gondola

I need to take the Pedaga Gondola (Opposite one of our hotels the Monte Sella****) to the top (there is a mid station if you don’t want to go so far) and connect with the PICULIN gondola down to PICULIN to get the ski bus to CORVARA (this runs every 20 mins in high season)

The state-of-the-art Piculin gondola

You can either take the gondola down or ski BLACK 45, which as an intermediate skier I found was a lovely run in the sun, so no ice and nice soft snow!

Follow the sign posts – PICULIN Alta Badia

The view of Alta Badia in the distance

On the way home… You can ski back to the bottom of the PEDAGA lift to San Vigilio on either a BLACK 40 or RED 41, I have to say the red was a lot nicer than the black  and good for a beginner to get back down as its wide and not busy ! The black is a little steeper and in the shade so a little icy.

On the way back on RED 41, with great views on San Vigilio

If you are not staying at Hotel Monte Sella opposite the PEDAGA gondola , then you can hop on the SKI TRANS BRONTA connection gondola  back to MIARA in the centre of San Vigilio, where within a few meters we have the hotels Almhoff Call, Hotel Brunella and Hotel Teresa

What a great day!!  Kronplatz and San Vigilio are all I expected – State of the art lifts that are fast  (I have never seen so many gondolas in one resort) Stunning views over the Dolomites &  superb varied skiing suitable for beginners to the advanced, and on top of that an easy connection to the Sella Ronda! WOW! Love it! Not to be missed! Mission accomplished.
