Recently myself and Mike were lucky enough to participate in an amazing excursion here in Zermatt, the Sunset Dinner Gornergrat excursion.
This trip takes place during high season here in Zermatt so this year ran up until August 24th but will be available again for our guests traveling during high season in July and August 2017. The excursion includes a return train ride with the Gornergrat railway from Zermatt village 1600 m up to the top of Gornergrat 3089 m. This fabulous rack and pinion train journey takes only 33 mins from bottom to top and leaves Zermatt at 19.24.
En route, you pass the intermediate stations of Findelbach; where there is a gorge and a stunning waterfall. You then travel onto Riffelalp with its iconic 5* hotel which owns its very own open air tram line (the highest in Europe) and onto Riffelberg offering fantastic vistas of the surrounding mountains. Riffelberg is where the outdoor performance of the “Matterhorn Story” took place in the summer of 2015 when Zermatt celebrated 150 years of the 1st ascent of the Matterhorn. Then onto Rotenboden and finally you arrive at the top station of Gornergrat. Here you will find a hotel where the mountaineers overnight before starting their intrepid hikes across the Gornergletscher to the famous Monte Rosa Hutte. There are also a few souvenir shops, a bar, self-service restaurant, a service restaurant and a very small chapel where visitors are invited to light candles.
When doing the Sunset Gornergrat trip there is a good chance you will you spot Ibex at the top as these are shy creatures and only venture out early in the mornings and in the late afternoon or early evenings.
Upon arriving at the top of Gornergrat you have plenty of time to take stunning photos and videos of the 5 glaciers you can see from there, as well as some of the best shots of the Matterhorn in the whole of Zermatt. You will usually catch a glimpse of lots of enthusiastic mountain bikers who like to catch the last train of the day up and then bike down when it is quiet.
After you’ve captured plenty of photographs it’s time to go inside the panoramic restaurant where you will be greeted with a glass of Prosecco to start the evening off.
A delicious all you eat buffet style Fondue Chinoise is then served. This starts with an extensive salad buffet with a variety of home baked breads.
The next course is the actual Fondue Chinoise. A pot of boiling hot bouillon will be served at your table and you are able to help yourself to a selection of beef, pork and veal. This is accompanied by chips and, or rice with a variety of mouth watering sauces and dips. You’re able to head up to the buffet as often as you wish and you cook the meats in the bouillon at your table. We would highly recommend enjoying a refreshing Swiss beer like Zermatt Beer or a glass or 2 of some local Valaisian wine. Dole Blanche (a very light blush wine) is great with fondue!
You’re then served a delicious dessert of the day whilst watching the sun set behind the Matterhorn. In between courses you can, of course, go out onto the terrace and capture the setting sun with more photos.
At the restaurant there are local musicians to entertain you during your meal with traditional Swiss music too. If you can drag yourself away after all of that, your train leaves Gornergrat at 10.40 pm to make the journey back down to Zermatt.
Honestly, this is a trip not to be missed if you are coming to Zermatt!
